Vanessa Holyoak

HOLYOAK

Vanessa Holyoak is an artist and writer working across installation, sculpture, sound, photography, video, performance and language. She constructs uncanny, minimalist environments that allude to notions of memory, loss, and the cognitive overload of the present, across both literary and visual media. The concerns of her work, among others, pertain to a discourse of cultural displacement, in which liminality, memory, and the phenomenology of embodied experience play central roles in the forging of a self beyond categories, paradigms, and borders. She holds a dual MFA in Photography & Media and Writing from the California Institute of The Arts, where she was a recipient of the Lillian Disney Scholarship, and a BA summa cum laude from Barnard College. She has shown work in art spaces and galleries in New York, Washington, D.C., and San Francisco, and in Los Angeles at the MAK Center for Art and Architecture, the Bendix Building (JOAN/Track 16 Gallery/Suite 534), Human Resources, Nomad Pavillion, Eastside International and CalArts. Her writing has appeared in Hyperallergic, East of Borneo, New Writing Anthology, rivulet, and Nightjar.
